Club Kids

The club kids of late 1980s and early 1990s America were so popular at their height of fame that they were paid to just turn up to parties, because this would attract attention, and then they would leave for another. The leaders of the club kids were Michael Alig and James St. James - Alig was actually taken under the wing of St. James, but eventually rose to similar fame if not higher stardom than his mentor.

Club kids had a lot to do with various drugs and in 1995 The Limelight, where Alig held the Disco 2000 night, was shut down on suspicion of drug trafficking. Unfortunately for Alig, this was when it started to fall apart, and it was all a case of too much, too young and too fast, the drugs had taken a hold of him, and eventually during an argument, he killed his friend and drug dealer Angel. The story of Alig has been recounted by St.James in his book, Disco Bloodbath, as well as in a documentary and feature, both based on the story by St. James.

Club kids in London began to surface in the 2000s with clubs like Nag Nag Nag and Kashpoint, but these only lasted 5 or 6 years themselves before dying out again. Boombox was formed even later, in 2006, and had strong links with the fashion industry, throwing parties for Alexander McQueen and Jonathon Saunders, which suggests it was a particularly cliquey and "rich kid" night, but even this came to an end in 2007.
