Folk

Folk music goes back to the 19th century and was interpreted as more than one thing: music for the working class, music transmitted by word of mouth and music with unknown composers. Work during the 19th century was both manual and communal and at that time there wasn't a way to listen to recorder music, so music was made by "common" people during both work and leisure times - it helped to reduce boredom during repetitive tasks at work and it was a way to tell historical stories, as well for entertainment purposes.

It was only during the 20th century that people started to use the word as a term for pop music.
