Goths are yet another offshoot of punk, more specifically post-punk, where in the 1970s some post-punk bands had gained a goth status but in England in the 1980s it began to become a genre in its own right. It suggests influences from 19th century gothic literature and horror films. In the same era in America it was 'death rock' that branched off from punk.
Generally attire is dark and unusual, however there are many styles within, such as dark wave and neo-medieval. Bands include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy and Sex Gang Children.

Today it is Germany where gothic tendancies thrive, with huge festivals taking place.
